The pictures that follow are composites of photos owned by Florence Brown.   They portray her early life here in Vernon Center. To some of them I have added text that appeared on the back of the post card or photo.   The text is in Florence Browns hand.   Apparently, at one time, postcards were a popular way of sending family or hometown photos.  If anyone can identify or provide more detail about the people in these photos, let us know!

Florence had a lot of post cards that contained images of the town or of her family.   If you have photos of Florence or her family that can help us to "fill in" those parts of her life that are not shown here.................her high school years, her days as a music teacher, photos you may have of her throughout her years here............. we would like to hear from you!

Above, the center image is of Florence and her father, Lewis Brown  and was taken about 1914.   The little note to Uncle Lee was found on the back of this photo.  I assume "hit the grit" means about the same as "hit the road" does today.   Since the roads were dirt and "grity" in those days, I guess that makes sense :)  The sweet image to the right contained the following description: "Robert and Dolly".    To the left is Florence and her mother Nell (Champlin) Brown sitting on their porch.  The image at the top is the family all dressed up and ready for a (maybe Sunday?) drive.  Florence is held by her mother with her father to the right.  But who are the others?

Early photos of Florence with her little wicker chair.

First Photos of Florence as a baby.

A variety of photos of Florence at her home or the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Champlin

This is a great photo!  Florence and her little wagon:)  This is was take at her Grandparents home.

The family having lunch during harvest season.  You can see the horses and what looks like a hay rack in the background.  A pretty typical scene in those days.  Often neighbors would work together during threshing season and other times of harvest, sharing equipment and labor and moving from farm to farm until everyone's crops were in.

Taken over at Lake Crystal at her Uncle George's first home by the Lake.  The photo was taken  in about 1916 and Florence was about 5 years old.
